When the United States Naval Academy was temporarily located in Newport because of the Civil War, among the students, or midshipmen, was a 17-year-old named Edward Julius Berwind. He was admitted to the academy on July 21, 1865, less than three weeks before it moved back to Annapolis.

Could this have been the Philadelphia native’s first look at Newport? We like to imagine the young man dreaming of someday having a house here. Thirty-six years later, after building his fortune, he did.

It is called The Elms.
