U.S. Coast Guard searches for plane that went down off Florida coast

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – A search was underway Sunday night for a small plane that reportedly crashed into the water off the coast of South Florida.
The U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement were looking for the Piper PA-28 near the Boynton Beach inlet, news outlets reported. The plane seats four people but it was unclear how many people were on board.
A person reported the plane was sinking, but search crews did not immediately locate the aircraft, Coast Guard Petty Officer Jose Hernandez told the Palm Beach Post.

The plane was flying from Palm Beach County Park Airport to Merritt Island Airport, about 140 miles (225 kilometers) north, news outlets reported.
Crews were searching for the plane from the air and the water. It was a search and rescue mission, Hernandez said.
