U.S. Coast Guard probes boat fire in waters off of Richmond Terrace

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the cause of a fire overnight on an unoccupied boat in the waters off Mariners Harbor, according to a spokesman for the federal agency.

The Coast Guard has dispatched a pollution response team and marine inspectors and investigation team, a spokesman for the Coast Guard told the Advance.

The blaze was called in at 11:46 p.m. Monday for the 75-foot boat docked at a pier at 3075 Richmond Terrace, according to a spokesman for the FDNY/EMS and the official FDNY Twitter feed.

The second and third decks sustained damage on the “Sea Hunter,” an offshore supply boat that is registered as a recreational vessel, according to the Coast Guard spokesman.

No injuries or rescues were reported in the fire, according to the FDNY spokesman.

Responding to a 911 report, the U.S. Coast Guard launched a boat to the scene arriving around 12:36 a.m., according to the federal agency’s spokesman.

The FDNY confirmed that there were no occupants on the boat, the Coast Guard spokesman said.

About 12 units and 60 firefighters brought the “all-hands” blaze under control at 1:16 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the FDNY spokesman and Twitter feed.

The Coast Guard has not yet located the current owner of the vessel and has no record of activity for the boat since 2013, according to the agency spokesman.
