Remains of Marine killed in Afghanistan return to Southland

The flag-draped coffin of Marine Cpl. Christopher Singer arrived Tuesday morning aboard a charter flight to the Los Alamitos Army Airfield at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos.

Singer, 23, was killed Jan. 21 during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division at Twentynine Palms.

Among those waiting the plane’s arrival were Singer’s wife, Brooke, and the couple’s 2-year-old daughter, Briyana.

A memorial service is set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest.
