‘Amazing Critter Cruise’ taking reservations

The Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists will hold their second annual Amazing Critter Cruise on Lake Norman the afternoon of June 16.

The three-hour family cruise will leave from Queen’s Landing (1459 River Highway, Mooresville) and features a pizza-pasta buffet, narration by the Catawba Riverkeepers Foundation and a live animal program by Zootastic.

Boarding will begin at 11:30 a.m., and the cruise will leave the dock at noon. The cost is $20 per person and must be paid in advance. Seating is limited. Make checks payable to the LNWC and mail them the LNWC, P.O. Box 4296, Mooresville, NC 28117. For information call 704-877-4788.

LNYC member a USCGA grad

Ensign Amanda Robinson, a member of the Lake Norman Yacht Club, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

Robinson received her commission during the academy’s graduation ceremonies May 16. She has been assigned to the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla., for basic aviation training.

Robinson is the second member of her family to attend the Coast Guard Academy. Her older brother, Kevin, a 2009 graduate, is a lieutenant junior grade in the Coast Guard.

Sailing scene

Registration is still open for the 12th annual Lake Norman Hospice Regatta, scheduled for June 9-10 at the Lake Norman Yacht Club. The regatta is a qualifying event for the Hospice Regattas National Championship, to be held in St. Petersburg, Fla., in April 2013.

Entries will be accepted in five divisions: spinnakers, non-spinnakers, cruisers, centerboard and board classes, plus juniors. Every spinnaker, non-spinnaker and cruiser entry must have a current Lake Norman PHRF certificate.

The entry fee is $50 for adults and $15 for juniors before June 1; that increases to $70 and $20 after that date. In addition, a $5 fee will be tacked on for any entrant who is not a member of U.S. Sailing.

Safety on the lake

The Lake Norman flotillas of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary have scheduled a series of boating safety classes beginning in mid-May.

Classes will meet 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. June 16 and Aug. 11 at Shepherds Volunteer Fire Department, 2014 Charlotte Highway, Mooresville; 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. June 23 and July 21 at Morningstar Marinas, 18020 Kings Point Drive, Cornelius; and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 23 at the Peninsula Yacht Club, 18501 Harbor Light Blvd., Cornelius.
